A Case Study of Momodou Lamin Joof’s Transformation with Access to Irrigation Technology
Momodou Lamin Joof, a retired Head Master living in Njongon Village in the Gambia, shows the transformative power of solar irrigation in rural communities. His journey from traditional farming methods to using a Futurepump solar water pump shows the potential for increased productivity on rural farms.
Background:
Njongon Village, like many rural communities in The Gambia, faces challenges in agricultural productivity due to limited access to water resources. Traditional farming methods, such as using buckets with ropes for irrigation, are labour-intensive and inefficient.
There is also still a heavy reliance on rain for irrigation, this means the seasonal nature of rainfall restricts farming activities, leading to inconsistent yields and income for farmers.
Transformation with Irrigation Technology:
Momodou Lamin Joof’s farming story has changed dramatically since he gained access to a Futurepump solar water pump. With his pump, he has ventured into banana and plantain farming, intercropped with pawpaw and vegetables and now has over 600 thriving trees/plants.
This farm expansion has literally been made possible by the solar irrigation pump. It has streamlined his farming operations by reducing the time and effort required for watering his garden. What once took hours with a bucket and rope, now only requires a fraction of the time, enabling him to efficiently manage his farm while the children are at school.
My target is to plant 1000 banana/plantain plants by the end of 2024. That will give me at least GMD 300,000 (USD 4,400) per year even if I sell each bunch for GMD 100 (USD 1.47).
Momodou Lamin Joof
Momodou feels privileged to have been able to invest in a solar irrigation system, and wishes for more farmers in his community to be able to benefit from the enhanced productivity it allows him. He especially encourages banana and plantain farming.
