For a farmer, water isn’t always where you need it. A field may be far from the nearest water source. You may have more than one plot to irrigate. A pond might be useful in one season, while another water source becomes more practical later. So why should your water pump be tied to just […]

For a smallholder farmer, conservation isn’t an abstract idea. It’s protecting the water that grows the crop, caring for the soil that produces the food, and managing what’s on the farm carefully enough that there’s something left for next season. That’s getting harder as rainfall is less predictable, droughts run longer, fuel prices climb, and […]
South Africa’s food system is under pressure from a myriad of issues ranging from load shedding to water shortage. Load shedding, refers to the deliberate, scheduled cutting of electricity supply to different areas on a rotating basis. This happens because the power grid cannot generate enough electricity to meet demand, so the utility intentionally switches […]
Spring in the UK is a season of promise and unpredictability in equal measure. Longer days and warming soil signal the start of the growing season but the weather doesn’t always cooperate. Hailstorms give way to sunny spells within hours, and rainfall patterns can shift dramatically week to week. For UK growers, this variability isn’t […]
Futurepump’s work in Malawi is gaining momentum, and I am pleased to be contributing as Field Manager, supporting activities across field testing, pilot distribution, and market research. As part of my onboarding, I recently visited key partners in Lilongwe and Mzuzu, which provided valuable early insights into both product performance and market reception. At […]
If you read our blog on growing wildflowers you already know that setting aside even a small patch of your land for nature can have surprisingly big benefits. More pollinators. Better pest control. Healthier soil. But wildflowers are really just the beginning. They are one piece of a much bigger farming approach that is gaining […]
We love hearing from farmers who’ve found creative, practical ways to make solar pumping work on their farms. This is the story of one UK sheep farmer who’s been using a Futurepump to supply water across their land – and the thoughtful approach they’ve taken to make it work brilliantly. About the farm The farm […]
The UK has just experienced one of the most remarkable winters in terms of rainfall. According to provisional statistics from the Met Office, several regions recorded their wettest winters since records began in 1836. While persistent rainfall can lead to flooding, saturated soil, and fewer hours of sunshine, it also presents a major opportunity to […]
The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer. It’s a powerful recognition of something we’ve known for a long time: women are at the heart of global food production. Yet they still face disproportionate barriers to getting the tools, finance and support they need to thrive. At Futurepump, we haven’t […]
Forests cover around 4.14 billion hectares of the Earth’s surface, roughly one third of the planet’s total land area. Yet deforestation continues to make headlines worldwide, driven by demand for timber, agricultural expansion, grazing, and construction. There is, however, reason for cautious optimism. The FAO’s 2025 Global Forest Resources Assessment reports that global deforestation has […]
As 2025 comes to an end, it has been a year of both progress and challenge for Futurepump and the farmers we work with. Climate change is no longer a distant issue – farmers are feeling its impact every day through unpredictable rainfall, rising temperatures, and longer dry seasons. These realities were reflected in global […]

Yet, globally, wetlands are under immense pressure from climate change and mismanagement of water and land. For conservation managers, organisations, and donors supporting environmental restoration, […]

Reliable water remains one of the biggest challenges in many developing regions. For millions of smallholder farmers around the world, water isn’t just for drinking-it’s the key to growing food, sustaining livestock, and building a better future. Yet, with unreliable rainfall, high fuel costs, and limited access to electricity, pumping water from wells or rivers […]
Across Africa, agriculture remains the heartbeat of most economies, employing up to 70% of the population and contributing a major share of GDP. Yet millions of smallholder farmers still rely on unpredictable rainfall or costly diesel pumps to irrigate their crops. As climate change intensifies and fuel prices skyrocketing, solar irrigation is emerging as one […]
